# 46 - Antelope Canyon Page, Arizona

When enough water containing abrasive sand flows rapidly over sandstone, it will, over thousands of years of time, cut through it leaving these walls of fantastically sculpted sandstone behind. On each clear day for about one and a half hours around noon, the sun will shine in the narrow slit in the rock and illuminate the sandstone so that it appears to glow. The mood becomes almost hypnotic and I found myself whispering to my companion so as to not disturb the mystique of the canyon. This is the canyon where all the hikers in a group except for the Navaho guide were drowned in a flash flood in 1997. As you can see there is no way out in the event of a flood so caution is a good thing to take along with you in places like these.
