# 105 Cheesecake - Colorado Plateau
I have never seen such a sandstone formation anywhere but this one hill. The evenly spaced layers of fluted sandstone create this pattern because they are of a harder composition than the rest of the hill and erode more slowly. I could only guess as to how they ended up in such a consistent pattern of rounded edges. But when the sun angle is just right, the shadows allow the eye to truly capture the pattern that would otherwise be lost. I titled this image “cheesecake” because the pattern reminded me of a nice dessert. Now why would a cold dessert come to mind in the hot desert?
