# 48 - Willow Lakes Gore Range Wilderness Area, Colorado The flowers you see in such profusion in these three photos bloom for only one week in August because the growing season at 11,500 feet is very short. The trick is to know which week that is. This time period is determined by such factors as how much snow fell the previous winter (it all has to melt before the flowers can even begin to grow) how warm the temperatures were in spring, whether spring was early or late, how many sunny days there were in the spring and summer and even how warm the summer was. In some years these factors delay the growing season enough that an early snow and cold snap in August kill them before they can even bloom. This is why it is against the law to pick wildflowers in Colorado. They have everything going against their odds of blooming and reproducing, so when picked they forfeit any chance of propagating and next year there well be fewer flowers for you to enjoy. So please look at, but don’t pick the flowers.
