# 52 - Zodiac Spires: Gore Range Wilderness Area, Colorado

This is a sunrise looking west. The direction you need to look for these is often reversed in the mountain environment. Many times the view towards the sun will be blocked by a mountain while there may be a peak high enough in the opposite direction to catch the warm colors. This sunrise almost didn’t happen. As you can see it appears to be totally cloudy with the peaks even shrouded in some of the clouds. I was discouraged for I had purchased a special wide angle lens for such compositions and had hiked for ten miles with a sunrise shot in mind. I set up my camera and was shivering in the damp cold waiting for the magic to begin. I was almost ready to pack it up in disappointment when all of a sudden the whole wall of rock began to glow. I rushed over to my camera and was able to get a few frames off before the light faded out once again behind the clouds. The colors you see here lasted for a short 20 seconds and I was able to capture them only because I had been there before and had known where to set up in advance. Ahhhhhhh!
