# 115 - Metate Arch: Escalante National Monument, Utah
(While you were sleeping series)
This photo is the culmination of 5 years work. It is taken in the dead of night using only available, natural light. The exposure runs for a time of two hours and was exposed on 50 speed Fuji film. The streaks in the sky are caused by the stars tracking through the sky with the rotation of the earth. They appear in a circular pattern because the earth rotates relative to the North star in the Northern Hemisphere. When I stare into this image, I am reminded of the qualities of the desert that appeal to me so much - the immensity of space, the timelessness of the universe and the uninterrupted silence.
