# 129 - Desert Oasis - Escalante National Monument, Utah
This desert scene is caused by rainwater from summer thunderstorms that pours down the sandstone walls towering over this pool. Sand is flushed out, leaving behind a depression. The pool is further maintained by seep springs emerging from resistant rock layers within the sandstone. Columbines attach themselves to the rock wall, and lush vegetation takes hold on the shoreline. The blue coloration on the walls of pink Navajo sandstone is actually caused by sky reflecting off the wet areas. The contrast in colors, textures and soft early morning light all combine in harmony to create this incredibly beautiful and unlikely scene in the midst of a desert. My hope should you be so fortunate to ever find such a rare and unspoiled place, would be to preserve it by leaving no trace of your presence. I covered others lack of ethics by removing trash from the area.
